Congestive heart failure ("CHF") is a serious medical condition in which the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. It is often caused by hypertension, diabetes or coronary heart disease. Approximately 5.8 million people in the United States suffer from CHF, and according to the CDC's National Hospital Discharge Survey (NHDS) data from 2000 to 2010, CHF is one of the most common reasons patients aged 65 and over are hospitalized.
